2015 IEEE SciVis Contest Cosmological Data Visualisation

Outreach | Visualisation

In 2015 I attended the course “High Performance Visualization for Large-Scale Scientific Data Analytics”, offered by the Ohio State University. During the course I became familiar with several methods of data Visualisation using High Performance Computing, as well as a number of Visualisation software, such as Paraview and VTK (Visualisation ToolKit). The final assignment of the course involved visualising and presenting parts of real cosmological data from the Dark Sky Simulations.

The results of the final assignment were included in the Proceedings of the 2015 IEEE Scientific Visualisation (SciVis) Contest, which concerned the ingestion, processing and visualisation of cosmological data related to dark matter particle clouds and halos from cosmological simulations. This particular work is centred around the visualisation of the particle clouds and halo formations in terms of the positions of particles/halos as well as various quantities of scientific interest, such as the gravitational potential, velocity and spin.
